With travel flows reduced to a fraction of pre-conflict levels, hotels and restaurants have been forced to rethink their strategies—temporarily closing in some cases, while in others pivoting sharply toward local clientele. Across the board, operators are working to maintain occupancy and footfall through increasingly competitive pricing and tailored offers.

For distributors serving the HORECA sector, the impact has been immediate and profound.

Two contrasting examples illustrate the current mood of the market. A Dubai-based importer and distributor of seafood reports that its average monthly caviar sales dropped by as much as 90% at the beginning of April compared to the previous year—a clear signal of the slowdown in luxury consumption tied to international visitors. At the same time, wholesalers specializing in chicken are experiencing sustained growth in demand, even seeking new sourcing channels to keep pace.

The message is clear: while luxury segments have contracted sharply, everyday consumption continues—and in some categories, is even expanding.

Many high-end restaurants have suspended operations, yet demand has not disappeared. Business continues, albeit at a different rhythm and with a different profile. The market has not stopped—it has simply shifted.

A Rapid Reset for Distributors

In this evolving landscape, distributors focused on the HORECA sector have had to adapt quickly, reshaping their business models almost in real time.

Within the tea and coffee segment, a clear pattern is emerging. Distributors with a diversified customer base—serving not only hotels but also independent cafés, restaurants, offices, and institutions—are managing to retain up to 50% of their activity.

Equally critical is inventory. Companies with available stock have been able to maintain stable pricing, avoiding the sharp increases that have affected competitors facing supply disruptions. With logistics costs rising and uncertainty surrounding future shipments, this advantage may prove decisive in the short term, allowing some players to consolidate or even expand their market share.

The Role of Brand in Times of Uncertainty

In such a scenario, can a tea or coffee brand make a difference? The answer, increasingly, is yes.

We spoke with Gihan De Silva, General Manager at Speciality Supplies in Dubai, a seasoned professional in the UAE food service sector. Having spent years distributing leading Italian coffee brands, De Silva has built a business that today demonstrates resilience through diversification.

Speciality Supplies’ strength lies in its broad client portfolio, spanning not only premium hotel chains but also independent restaurants, café operators, corporate offices, and institutional buyers—segments that have continued purchasing despite the downturn in tourism.

The company’s product range includes Caffrino 1884, its own coffee brand developed through custom blends, and the well-established Sri Lankan tea brand Akbar. According to De Silva, the versatility of Akbar’s tea range, combined with the brand’s strong positioning around sustainability and biodegradable packaging, has opened new opportunities.

Hotels, increasingly focused on environmental certifications such as Green Key, are turning to brands that support their sustainability goals. At the same time, smaller operators are seeking practical, compliant solutions to meet the UAE’s evolving regulations on single-use plastics. In both cases, the right product offering becomes a strategic asset.

Another critical factor underpinning Speciality Supplies’ stability is stock availability. With sufficient inventory secured until early Q3 2026, the company has been able to navigate ongoing logistical disruptions without passing cost increases onto customers—a competitive advantage in a highly price-sensitive environment.

Lessons for the Future

If one lesson stands out, it is this: flexibility is no longer optional.

Smaller, agile operations—combined with a well-balanced portfolio of products and clients—are proving to be the most resilient. The ability to serve multiple segments, adapt quickly, and align with emerging trends such as sustainability is becoming essential.

At the beginning of 2026, few would have anticipated such a disruption to the UAE hospitality sector. Yet, as in previous crises, the industry is learning and evolving. If the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation and direct-to-consumer strategies, the current moment is likely to reinforce the importance of price diversification, supply chain resilience, and client diversification.

Even in one of the world’s most dynamic and seemingly stable markets, unpredictability remains a constant. The companies that embrace this reality—adapting not only to survive, but to reposition—will be the ones shaping the next phase of the UAE’s hospitality landscape.

The UAE’s hospitality sector, long driven by international tourism and global mobility, is facing one of its most complex moments in recent history.
